Hyderabad, Aug. 25[DC]: A few hours before actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi’s first public meeting at Tirupati, the state government showered another sop on the Kapu community to woo them.  The government unearthed a GO which was in cold storage for the past 14 years, to help students from the Kapu, Telaga, Balija and Vontari sub-castes among Kapus to receive scholarships on par with students of Other Backward Classes from the Intermediate to graduation level if their family income is below Rs 1 lakh per annum.

While addressing a press conference at the Congress Legislative Party office on Monday, ministers Mr Botcha Satyanarayana and Mr Kanna Lakshmi Narayana said that though the GO was issued in 1994 when Kotla Vijaya Bhasker Reddy was the chief minister, it was not implemented by the successive Telugu Desam government which ruled for nine years.

"As soon as our government assumed office under the leadership of the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, we have been implementing various schemes for the welfare of Kapus. Continuing that work, this government has decided to enhance the budgetary provision to give scholarships to Kapu students from Rs 2 crores to Rs 25 crores. Relevant amendments to the present GO will be done in a day or two," they added.
