CHENNAI, MAY 11 (TNN) The concept of motherhood has changed over the years in Tamil cinema.
She has evolved from playing second fiddle to father characters and created strong character-roles. On the occasion of Mother’s Day, we feature two recent movies that had strong reel mothers.
Raam
Though billed as a thriller, Ameer’s work stood out in this film mainly for portraying the relationship between mother (played by Charanya) and son (an excellent outing for Jeeva). As the caring-yet-frustrated mom, Charanya struck a chord with the audience. The song Aarariraro featured excellent lines that praised motherhood. Sample this: Ulaganthin Bandagale Nee Solli Thantaye… Pirappukum Irapakume Vazhinadathi Sendraye.
M Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi
The modern mom — who went to discos with her son, had coffee together in the morning, pulled his leg about girlfriends — had to be featured in some way, and M Kumaran offered ample scope for that. Nadhiya made a strong statement on screen as Jayam Ravi’s mom and this film probably marked off a unique trend even in movie titles! Celebrating the success of the film, all the names of the mothers of the technicians were reportedly put up in a banner.
