More trouble for TD ahead

The Telugu Desam leaders are getting jittery as the public meeting of actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi in Tirupati is just a day away. With rumours that Chiranjeevi will announce a list of politicians who are ready to join the new outfit during the meeting, the TD leaders are now virtually taking a headcount of its leaders district wise.

Since the Telugu Desam is the worst affected political party due to the actor’s political entry till now and since some of its senior leaders have already switched loyalties to Chiranjeevi’s camp, the TD president, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, intensified efforts to keep his flock together.  On Sunday, Mr Naidu hosted a breakfast for presidents of all districts wings of the party at his residence in Hyderabad. It may be mentioned here that it is very rare for Mr Naidu to sit for breakfast along with his partymen. During the breakfast meeting, the TD president is believed to have enquired about the likely impact of Chiranjeevi’s political outfit on the Telugu Desam. He also reportedly sought the opinions of the leaders on the separate Telangana issue.

Though Mr Naidu is trying to persuade the disgruntled leaders in the party to keep them within the party, some more migrations seem to be imminent. Grapevine has it that the former minister and senior TD leader from north Andhra, Mr Tammineni Sitaram is most likely to desert the party.  Mr Sitaram, who is also the official party spokesperson has been keeping himself away from party activities. This development has led to speculations that he would switch loyalties to the Chiranjeevi camp. Mr Sitaram’s recent letter to the TD president created a furore in the party.

When we contacted Mr Sitaram, he said that he was perturbed by "some developments in the party".  However, he refused to elaborate. He neither ruled out nor confirmed his plans to join the Chiranjeevi camp.  It is learnt that Mr Sitaram has almost made up his mind to pledge his support for the actor.According to sources, the TD MLAs Mr Ch. Ayyannapatrudu and Mr G. Srinivasa Rao are also seriously contemplating on joining the Chiranjeevi camp.
