Nalini has requested the Andhra Pradesh State Human Rights Commission (APSHRC) to provide security to the couple. Nalini expressed fears that the police may force her out of Chetan, her husband’s house, and hand over to her parents. This comes a day after a kidnap case was lodged against Chiranjeevi, the Praja Rajyam chief, who was part of their marriage ceremony.
On Sunday, altogether 10 people, including Nalini and Chetan, met the chairperson of the state human rights commission and informed him about their problems. While Nalini is from the upper caste, Chetan belong to the Scheduled Caste community.
In her statement before the Commission’s chairperson, Nalini said she met Chetan in Hyderabad and married despite her parents’ opposition. The couple is residents of Erramanzil within the limits of the Punjagutta police station. The commission in its order has directed the assistant commissioner of police, Punjagutta, to file a report on the complaint lodged by Nalini’s parents by September 10.
While the police is entitled to inquire into the matter and also examine the witnesses, they should not harass or arrest them. They have also been asked not to detain them beyond the permissible limits. The commission said the couple were married in accordance with the Buddhist ceremonial rights on August 30. It added that since both Nalini and Chetan are adults, there is no way that their legal marriage can be nullified without their consent.
