Padma Awards Presented

At a glittering ceremony, Indian President Pratibha Patil on Saturday presented the nation’s civilian awards, Padma Awards 2008, to 58 of the 135 eminent personalities whose names were declared earlier this year. The government however did not name anybody for the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, this year. Saturday’s awardees include seven Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian honour, followed by 17 Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award and 34 Padma Shri awards. P Sushila, Barkha Dutt, Jasdev Singh, Padma Desai, Manoj Night Syamalan, Kantipudi Padbhanabiah, Bhaichung Bhutia, Ella Venkateswar Rao, Dr Surya Rao, Ustad Ali Khan, Neelkant kalyani, Lakshmi Mittal and Vishwanath Anand and others were the awardees.
