Chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy on Thursday inaugurated the three-day ‘Varuna Yagam’ at Exhibition Grounds here. The ‘yagam’ is being organised by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) to propitiate the rain god. Talking to the media, the chief minister said that this programme was organised as part of the yagams that were being conducted across the state. He said during the last five years, the rain gods have been benevolent and that had helped the state in achieving record agriculture production.
The chief minister expressed the hope that the rain gods would once again shower their benevolence on the state and bring copious rains so that the agriculture production would be good and the state will be able to play a major role in providing food security to the country. Earlier, the chief priest of TTD Ramana Deekshitulu said that the sound of veda mantras would bring rains. Last year also the TTD had conducted the yagam and it rained on the same evening, he said.
Meanwhile, assistant meteorologist R V Subba Rao predicted that there are chances of shower on Thursday night and Friday in several parts of the city. He said because of instability in the upper air and mass of cloud over Vidharbha in Maharashtra and Orissa, there are chances of wind movement towards Hyderabad. Though showers are expected, the intensity of them cannot be predicted, Subba Rao added.
